Rainbow
A thundershower’s moisture fills the air
and synchronously smears the solar glare.
Each droplet twists sunlight, becomes a prism
a rainbow of refractive pointillism.
In pixellated images each dot
associates a color with its spot.
To figure out the spatial mystery
our mind decodes each freckle’s history.
But light can also propagate in waves
each point as separate origin behaves.
A trillion lenses blend in synergy
in brilliance made of selfless energy.
Each soul reflects, enlightens and is gone
yet transcendental meaning is passed on.
For centuries scientists debated whether light is made of particles or waves. There is a metaphor here worth reflecting.
Particles are discreet entities, and in particle theory each photon cause an effect. The history of each individual photon causes a reaction.
Wave behavior, such as the refraction which makes a rainbow, is different. A rainbow arises when light waves pass through water droplets at a specific angle. It is not dependent on discreet individuals, but depends on the collective effect of the entire system.
We recognize we are part of the human species. But what do we mean by that?
